Target Opens Recycling Centers in All 1,740 Stores  

Minneapolis based Target (NYSE: TGT) announced Tuesday that it is rolling out a massive nationwide recycling initiative with centers at the front of each of its 1,740 U.S. stores. The recycling stations will accept aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers, plastic bags, MP3 players, cell phones and ink cartridges. Full article

 

Building a Green Economy

The casual reader might have the impression that there are real doubts about whether emissions can be reduced without inflicting severe damage on the economy. In fact, once you filter out the noise generated by special-interest groups, you discover that there is widespread agreement among environmental economists that a market-based program to deal with the threat of climate change - one that limits carbon emissions by putting a price on them - can achieve large results at modest, though not trivial, cost. GRANTS

Funds for Habitat Restoration in Coastal America and the Great Lakes

The FishAmerica Foundation provides funding for hands on-projects at the local level to keep fish and waters healthy. These projects enhance fish populations, restore fish habitat, improve water quality, and advance fisheries research in North America and Canada-thereby increasing the opportunity for sportfishing success. More details here.

 

Urban Watershed Capacity Building Grant

A key component of the Urban Watershed Capacity Building Grant is to engage communities in capacity building activities to foster an increased connection, understanding, and ownership of their waters. EPA is soliciting proposals from eligible applicants that address the following two project components: (1) establish and manage a competitive urban watershed subaward program; and (2) provide urban watershed technical services to subawardees. Household Water Well System Grant Program

The Household Water Well System (HWWS) Grant Program provides grants to qualified private non-profit organizations to establish lending programs for household water wells. Homeowners or eligible individuals may borrow money from an approved organization to construct or upgrade their private well systems. Click here.

 

Computational Toxicology: Biologically-Based Multi-Scale Modeling

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications for research in developing quantitative, dose-response models to elucidate the associations between environmental agents and toxicity pathways across multiple scales of biological organization. Additionally, this solicitation calls for research into ways in which the data underlying these models can be managed and shared for easier access, interpretation and use by the broader community of researchers and risk assessors. EPA Accepting Applications to Operate Five-Year National Environmental Education Training Program

The purpose of the National Training Program is to deliver environmental education training and long-term support to teachers and other education professionals across the U.S. to enable them to teach effectively about environmental issues. U.S. institutions of higher education and 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations are eligible to apply or to be partners in a consortium. More details here.

What's Next for Water Quality in Pennsylvania? 

On Saturday, May 1, 2010, watershed associations and their allies will meet to discuss Pennsylvania's water quality future at the Ramada Inn Conference Center in State College, PA. "What's Next for Water Quality in Pennsylvania?" is a Summit sponsored by the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds, PA Department of Environmental Protection, and the Robert Morris University Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management.
