Water
Creature of the Week:
Bagiennik
is a Slavik water demon. It lives in the depths of lakes and
rivers. It has two nostrils located between its eyes that excrete
an oily substance that has the ability to burn people it contacts.
They are detected by bubbles rising to the surface of the water or darker
and murkier water.

Warned Not to Eat Fish from Pymatuning Reservoir in Crawford County, PA
The departments of
Environmental Protection and Health and the Fish and Boat Commission
have issued a "Do Not Eat" consumption advisory for all
species of fish taken from the Pymatuning Reservoir in Crawford County
while officials investigate the cause of a large fish kill that has
occurred over the past two weeks. Full article.

Living Buildings, Living Cities, and
$125,000 Up for Grabs
A new contest from the Cascadia Region Green Building
Council is offering serious cash for the best visual renderings of an
existing city transformed into a place that's sustainable. Like, really
sustainable. The Living City Design Competition is calling for:
-Photo-realistic three-dimensional modeling and renderings
(a napkin sketch won't cut it)
-Collaboration from designers, planners, artists and
animators
-Cities designed around the principles of the
hyper-rigorous Living Building Challenge
The First Prize winner will get $75,000, and two smaller
prizes will come with $25,000 each. More details here.
ARIPPA
AML/AMD Reclamation $20,000 Award
To commemorate
their 20th Anniversary, the Anthracite Region Independent Power
Producer's Association (ARIPPA) is offering a competitive award to
watershed organizations working on Abandoned Mine Land (AML) and/or
Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD) remediation projects. Grants ranging from
a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $10,000 will be awarded to at least
one eligible environmental organization or Conservation District in the
Bituminous Region and one eligible environmental organization or
Conservation District in the Anthracite Region in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania actively working on AML/AMD issues. Grant proposals should
be for on-the-ground AML/AMD construction projects with a completion
date between August 2009 and August 2011. Click here for more

Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Pulling Together Initiative
The Pulling Together
Initiative, a program of the National Fish and Wildlife
Foundation (NFWF), supports nonprofit organizations and local, county,
and state government agencies engaged in collaborations that will help
control invasive plant species.
Energy
Efficiency Projects in Appalachia Supported
The Appalachian Regional
Commission (ARC) supports economic and social development in
the Appalachian Region, including all of West Virginia and parts of
Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North
Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Through the Planning and Implementation of Community-Based Energy Projects
request for proposals (RFP), ARC will provide seven to fifteen grants
of up to $75,000 to assist Appalachian communities in leveraging
renewable energy and energy efficiency resources to revitalize their
economies.
Renewable
Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements: USDA
This program
provides support for energy audits and renewable energy development
assistance in rural areas. Support is also provided to purchase and
install renewable energy systems and make energy efficiency

Training
The early bird rate of just $150 includes two full
days of workshops, discussions, caucuses, one-on-one consulting,
keynotes, the debate, and lunches, too. If you use the tips from just
one workshop, you should be able to raise enough money for

Susquehanna
Sojourn to Explore West Branch
The Susquehanna
Sojourn will be held on the West Branch this year, beginning Sunday,
June 13 in Renovo and ending the following Saturday - 97 miles away -
at the Shikellamy State Park in Sunbury. Paddlers in canoes and
kayaks will experience life on the river and have the opportunity to
participate in service projects while learning about the heritage of
the West Branch Susquehanna region. The registration deadline is

There is a
"Call for Abstracts for Oral Presentations, Posters and Electronic
Demonstrations" for the National Training Conference on the Toxics
Release Inventory (TRI) and Environmental Conditions in Communities
that will be held on November 1-4, 2010, in Washington, D.C., at the
Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. This year's conference expands
on previous TRI National Training conferences to include sessions on
other environmental information and data associated with the conditions
and trends in ecological and human health that collectively help to
support environmentally-related decision making in communities. More
