EQB Designates
Seven Streams as 'Exceptional Value,' Increases Protection for 265
Miles of Waterways
Environmental
Protection Secretary John Hanger announced today that 265 miles of
streams in Pennsylvania will receive increased protection after being designated
as "exceptional value" waterways by the Environmental Quality

Settlement sends millions to clean up mercury dump at
Black Pine mine near Philipsburg
An old mine with the dubious distinction of the worst
mercury deposit in Montana will receive roughly $17.5 million in
cleanup work over the next several years. Full article here.
EPA Releases Guidance to Help Federal Facilities Better
Manage Stormwater
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued new
guidance to help federal agencies minimize the impact of federal
development projects on nearby water bodies. The guidance is being
issued in response to a change in law and an Executive Order signed by
President Obama, which calls upon all federal agencies to lead by
example to address a wide range of environmental issues, including

Foundation Mid-Atlantic Grants Program

Maximum Grant Amount: $5,000
Deadline: December 31, 2010
Community organizations applying for grants may be
eligible for donations of $500 to $5,000 for local projects and
programs. Funds could be used to support such worthwhile projects as:
* Backing local food pantries or emergency feeding efforts
* Aiding 4-H or FFA programs
* Building a new park pavilion for the community
* Establishing a local wetland preserve
* Purchasing books for the community library
To be considered, grant proposals must demonstrate how the donation
will be used to help improve community quality of life. Mid-Atlantic
grants are generally restricted to organizations that have been granted
tax-exempt status under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue
Code.
Applications for this program are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Ohio Environmental Council's 2010 vernal pool workshop
This workshop series, hosted by the OEC and Ohio Vernal
Pool Partnership will educate citizens, landowners, officials, and
other environmentalists about the great benefit of collecting data from
vernal pools. Other goals include developing vernal pool monitoring
teams to document and collect data throughout Ohio.
Participants in the workshop will:
· learn
the threats to protecting these important seasonal wetlands
· how
and why to collect vernal pool data
· enjoy
a field trip to a vernal pool, accompanied by several experts
· learn
how to spot salamanders and identify different frog calls
