After 18 years as a newspaper reporter and editor, Sam Adams spent four running his own business as a grants consultant and freelance writer. His book Precious Blood was published in 2007, and shortly after that he committed two years to national service as an OSM/VISTA with the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team. His service ended recently in 2009, and he returned to work for himself. He is a field chemistry instructor for Kentucky River Watershed Watch and in November 2009 completed the National Technical Training Program Instructor Training Course, an invitation-only class that certifies instructors for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining. He has taught media relations to VISTAs, AmeriCorps State and National members, and watershed groups. He has been a member of the ECRR board since December 2008.

Bruce holds a B.S. (Penn State) and M.S (Iowa State) in chemistry, and a Masters in Education (California University of PA). He has served as WPCAMR's regional Coordinator since 2001. He has over 25 years experience in industry developing automated chemical instrumentation, air pollution detection and nanotechnology applications of chemical and biological analysis. Bruce has also served as the coordinator of Fayette County’s Strategic Plan for economic revitalization. He is on the adjunct faculty on Penn State’s Fayette Campus teaching a variety of computer classes and has served on a variety of non-profit boards. He lives with his wife Carol and canine son Andy in Uniontown, PA. He has a particular interest in the coal mining history and heritage Pennsylvania.

Craig has been with the SCD for 31 year. Allegany County is one of two counties in Maryland that has coal mining. Craig presently serves on the Maryland State Land Reclamation Committee, a group that oversees coal mine reclamation efforts in western Maryland. Craig also serves as President of the Western Maryland Resource Conservation and Development Council, Chairman of the Maryland Envirothon Committee, past chair of the ECRR, and is past chair of the Upper Potomac Tributary Strategy Team. He has received four Governor’s Citations for his work in environmental education and natural resource conservation.

Paul is the Executive Director of the Middle Nolichucky Watershed Alliance in Greene County, Tennessee, and since July 2008 has been under contract to the Soil Conservation District as a consultant to manage EPA 319 grant creek restoration programs. He has 15 concurrent years in Quality Assurance and Environmental Management, and 40+ years in military communications electronics and fiber optics. Paul was the Greene County Soil Conservationist from 2003 - 2008. He currently holds certifications as a Conservation Planner (USDA-TN), Nutrient Management Planner (USDA-TN), Technical Services Provider (USDA-TN), Watershed Planner (USDA-TN), Stream Restoration Planner (USDA-TN), EPA Storm Water Management Planner, ISO 9002 Quality Management Auditor, and ISO 14002 Environmental Management Auditor. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland and a MBA from Liberty University.

Dewey was born in Wyoming County, WV. After leaving in 1961 to follow a railroad career, he moved back to Mullens in his home county in 2001 to help local citizens implement a West Virginia University sponsored community Design Team Plan. Dewey solicited the aid of the AmeriCorps programs to work with volunteers and other agencies to build the Rural Appalachian Improvement League, and his efforts have culminated in several prestigious awards.

Alice coordinates EKU’s interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research and outreach programs to understand eastern Kentucky ecosystems. Her efforts connect the university’s technical expertise with the region’s needs while linking research to math and science education at the university and throughout the region. Alice has taught for 17 years, and has a PhD in City and Regional Planning from Ohio State University. Her work includes storm water management, riparian landscape preservation and rural best management practices.
Mike King ECRR Board of Directors.
Mike is a lifelong resident of Montgomery, West Virginia. He has work for a major electric utility company for over 37 years being involved in many aspects of the electrical industry, and is a frequent team member developing
safety and training programs across the operating system. Mike is one of the founding members of the Morris Creek Watershed Association serving as the chairperson on the Stream Restoration Committee and the Vista supervisor for the organization. He has extensive knowledge of West Virginia and surrounding states, having spent many hours in the Appalachians in his professional duties, as well as being an avid outdoorsman, hunter and off road driving enthusiast. Mike has been married to his girlfriend Wanda for the past 36 years, they have 3 children, Jamie, John and Christopher and 4 grandchildren. He and his family have a vested interest in the well being and future of our Region.

Martha grew up in Boston, and for the last four years, has worked on water quality, first as a VISTA volunteer in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and now on a watershed team with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Gray, Tennessee.

Kristyn graduated from Ohio University with a BA in Environmental and Plant Biology. She has been Watershed Coordinator for Friends of Lower Muskingum River, Inc since 2005 – a local watershed group in southeastern Ohio. Her project management work includes Stream Team Volunteer Monitoring in the Meigs Creek Watershed, developing Drinking Water Protection Plans with four public water districts along the Muskingum River, promoting a storm water solution for the City of Marietta, and providing outreach and education on water quality issues throughout the Lower Muskingum River Watershed.

Mike has been with ECRR since its inception and, for 11 years, has managed a highly-recognized watershed in Ohio. Under Mike’s leadership, more than $8 million has been leveraged for projects to reduce the impacts of acid mine drainage upon Monday Creek and the Hocking River. Mike also serves as the Director of Watershed Resources for Rural Action, supervising the programs in three watersheds in Appalachian Ohio. Prior to his watershed career, Mike worked for over 25 years as an environmental planner and was President of an environmental consulting firm. Mike is a past vice chair of the ECRR. He holds a B.S. degree in Resource Development (Iowa State) and a M.A. Degree in Geography (Univ. of Iowa). He is a volunteer firefighter, serving on two local fire departments. He and his wife Mary operate a bed and breakfast and raise llamas.
